Happiness in June (and a little bit of July)

I seem to be settling in a once a month type of pattern.  I'll try to do better.  But SUMMER....it's so crazy/busy/fun/very, very tiring.
That's how the first part of June was anyway.  Because of this:

Yup, Girl's Camp.  That's happiness wrapped in a cloak of complete exhaustion.  So much fun but all of us leaders were tired for about a week after we came home (or longer).  We went to Aspen Lakes, just outside of Heber City.  It was wonderful.  They are very relaxed (for our service project we climbed up on the steep roof of the pavilion to spray paint the exhaust fan.  Scared me silly!) and a gorgeous location.  There was lakes with canoes, zip lines, an obstacle course, a really cool tower that reminded us of King Benjamin, and the couple missionaries that worked there were so sweet.

And while we were in the canoes, we saw a moose with her sweet calf. See the brown spot in all the reeds on the bank?  That's a moose.  I'd never seen a moose calf, so very cute, although we didn't get close to get a really good look.  Some of the girls were trying to get closer, and that scared me again.  Teenagers!  Those girls were amazing during the week, though, so much fun and energy and they helped and taught and were wonderful.

So I came home and slept, slept, slept, and then it was Father's day.  It was kind of camping influenced this year.  We got him a hydration backpack and a super comfortable camp chair.
My camera was acting weird, but you can see Farris enjoying the chair...and Abby making off with the Swedish fish we gave him.
Abby is happy when she plays dress up.  She dressed up in a dinosaur costume and was running around growling at everyone.  I know, I know, it's totally a parent-who-thinks-their-kid-is-too-cute moment, but I really do think she's too cute. I love how she waddles, it makes me laugh every time.
She's so cute she had her own parade!  No, just kidding, we had a neighborhood parade, a favorite tradition going on three years now.  The kids can dress up in costumes and decorate their bikes/scooters/strollers/what have you and the kids love it.  No candy required, unlike a regular parade.  And unfortunately, I took two pictures and the camera battery died, so there you go.

After we got it charged again, Felicity borrowed the camera to take pictures of Abigail's cute chubby little fingers on the piano.  Such a sweet picture.  She loves the piano, but let's just say she's not a prodigy.  Yet anyway.
The next weekend we met Melissa and Nicki up the canyon and camped together.  Nicki's birthday is the day after Joseph's, so we had birthday cake (yummy ice cream cake from Cold Stone).  Joseph was practically dancing,  Nicki took it a little calmer.  Abigail really enjoyed it.

Nicki and Melissa have lots of neat camping gear, including a tent that has a doggy door. Seriously, it has a doggy door, how cool is that!?!  No dogs in our camp site, but the kids loved it.  Anything little is amazing to kids.  And really, to adults, too.
Abby borrowed a hat and snuggled into Nicki and Melissa's gear.  There seems to be a lot of Abigail pictures.  I guess two year olds (almost, almost) are just very photogenic.
The next morning we packed up and hiked the grotto. A perfect hike with kids, with fun at the end.
But the water was very cold.  That's what Seth's face is saying in this picture.
Farris with Abby in the backpack.

Felicity wasn't feeling very good, and by the time we got back to the van she had a fever and fell asleep almost immediately.  But she still smiled for the camera.
Farris handed Abigail to me and got drenched.  In that cold, cold water.  I'm a chicken when it comes to cold water, I'll get in the hot pots instead.
The hike has lots of logs crossing and crisscrossing the stream. We were inspired with the logs that had moss, they would be perfect for a fairy garden.
On the way home we stopped at a park to eat lunch and Caleb was trying to teach Abigail how to roll down the slope.  She mostly went sideways, then she'd sit up and look at him and try to roll down, and not so much.  Like with the piano, she's not a prodigy.  Yet.
Then it was Joseph's birthday.  Which always makes him happy, happy, happy.  In fact, tonight we had the kids tell us their happiest and their saddest thing that happened today, and his saddest thing was that it wasn't his birthday.  He's 7 now, which astounds me and it shouldn't, but it does.  For his cake he wanted a number 7 with cars on it, kind of like Seth's.
Yes, that is a number 6 on his 7th birthday cake.  But see the other candle next to it?  That means that 6+1=7.  And it also means that we need to buy more birthday candles and I vetoed using just matches stuck in the cake.
His favorite presents?  Definitely the basketball (just like Caleb got) and a scooter.  He was so excited.  I still love getting presents for these kids, they get excited for so many things and are so happy.
We sure love our Joseph.  His personality is fun and crazy and he gets wild ideas and giggles all the time.  He loves his family and gives exuberant hugs.  He's our friendly kid and loves being around people.  Anyone, anyone to play with and nothing makes him sadder (except it not being his birthday) then when no one is around to play with.  He doesn't get bored, he gets lonely.  Another funny thing about him?  He calls himself Big J.  Yes, he makes us laugh every day.
And Caleb found a huge flake in the frosted flakes and was so happy about it he had me take a picture before he ate it.  And enjoyed it, because the kids don't get frosted flakes very often.
And what makes me happy?  Paint.  I liked the red on our living room walls, but I was slowly getting to unlike it more and more.  So I decided to completely reverse it to a nice quiet, comforting, soft gray.  And I found out that Tarilynn loves to paint.  That made me happy, too!  So she came over and helped and helped and then got Blake to help.  Just changing the background of our living room changed the mood so much.  I love it.

I have a few more changes planned and I'd love to paint more of the house, but I need to convince Farris that we need to paint more.  He likes the new color, too, so maybe it will be easier to convince him now. Tarilynn, get your brushes ready!  Hopefully, any way!

Caleb, age 9

Yup, my boy is growing up.  He's funny and sweet and smart, a great helper, kind to his brothers and sisters (most of the time!) and he still gives perfect hugs.  He's our sporty boy and enjoys anything that requires running around and some kind of ball.  This year he seems to be leaning more toward basketball, which is good because I think he's going to be tall! He thinks he's going to be taller than my by his next birthday...I don't agree, but I think he will be taller before he turns 12.
He asked for a basketball cake (thanks Melissa for the loan of your ball cake pan, we use it at least once a year!).  He wants a basketball, I think perfect time to try out a pin from pinterest!
It's a piƱata cake, it's pretty simple.  All you do is make two layers, cut out a small place in the middle, fill with candy and then layer them together with frosting.  Here're the link to the original site (and if you are pinning this, please pin the original site instead of my pictures, thanks!)
Her cake is beautiful and fun!

Farris picked out a basketball for Caleb.  We're still looking for a hoop to put in our driveway, but for now he loves to go with his dad to Wednesday night basketball at the church or when I'm exercising.
We also found a shooter thing for his bey blades.  He saw it at Ross and wanted to buy it sooo bad, and then we snuck behind his back and got it for his birthday!
And Wreck It Ralph (I liked this one a lot). Happy 9th birthday to our sweet Caleb!
About a week after his birthday for Cub Scouts Caleb was in the Caropolis.  All the boys made a cardboard box into a car.  Caleb did his all by myself and did not listen to any of my suggestions and I think he did a great job!
What a great picture of Seth Felicity took!  I think it captures his personality pretty good, my goofy boy.
Ready to start the race!
In the race, there are three pit stops:  Cleaning the windshield (the pit crew sprays the racer's goggles and then wipes them off), refueling (the racer drinks a cup of water) and rotating the tires (the shoes are taken off, socks exchanged feet and then shoes put back on--supposed to be on the right feet, but a lot got put on the wrong feet).  The racer's pit crew was usually their siblings.  Joseph was gleeful when it came to cleaning the windshield. Tire rotations proved the hardest.  For some reason they couldn't get Caleb's socks on.

The cupcakes after the race were a big hit.
Caleb had to display a collection as the last thing before he got his wolf.  He originally was collecting bottle caps.  Basically he was walking around the neighborhood picking up water bottle caps and beer bottle caps.  I discouraged both and we came up with showing his collection of LEGO men.  And we made it, he's got his wolf.  I'm still not up to speed about all his cub scout stuff, I'd better start paying attention I've got a couple more to go!

Lots of May celebrations!

We were coming home from Orem one day and a rainbow was perfectly positioned over the Y on the mountain.  It's not a great picture, but for me leaning past the Farris who was driving and shooting through the window as we were on the freeway, I think it's a pretty good shot.
Joseph's class program.  First graders make me laugh.  What a funny age!  He did a great job and sang his songs with gusto.  That's a Joseph thing.
Joseph had team teachers this year and I think they understood him pretty well.  at least by the end of the year they appreciated him better  The first parent teacher conference they looked a little nervous when we came in.  They asked us if we knew that he liked to talk a lot?  Uhhh, yeah.  They said they would move him around, but no matter who they put him by he would still strike up a conversation.  And he got his work done, but nobody around him did.  They kept saying that he was a great kid and really smart, just a little too social.  He was doing better by the end of the year, but we still need to work on his concentration.  That boy gets distracted like NO OTHER.  We even made a poem up for him when he does his homework (it was my attempt to stop getting frustrated and yelling at him):  "Hocus-pocus, Joseph FOCUS!"  It didn't always work, but it usually at least got a smile and worked enough that I appreciated it.

Joseph and his best friend Hyrum.  Which I still think is ironic.

And another cause of celebrations that day:  we'd only been home a little while when Joseph lost his very first tooth.  He was delighted!
Felicity had her program last of all the kids.  The fifth graders are getting a little more mature but still fun and they had a slide show with each of their baby pictures, very cute!
Lissy with best friend Bailey.  We'll miss haveing her around as much!

Felicity had an outstanding teacher this year.  She was understanding and patient and lots of fun.  She helped Felicity work through her math difficulties without getting her more discouraged.  She was very supportive, even coming to two of Felicity's soccer games, there was two or three on the same team from her class.  Unfortunately for us, Miss Wood is going to another school next year so we won't get her for Caleb in two years.  But we wish her the best of luck!

And a big celebration on our family was for my nephew Blake.  He graduated from High School this year and is getting ready to leave on his mission to Norway in August.  He leaves on August 21 and Tanner is coming home on August 17 from his mission in Ohio.  Only a small window for brotherly time.  We're excited for both of them.
The last day of school celebration!  Exciting, exciting.
All three of them like school, but can anything compare to the feeling of being free for the summer?  At least until they realize that mom has a whole list of chores...

Right after the kids came home we threw bags in the van and drove to Idaho.  Farris' sister Charitie graduated from high school (another big celebration!) and the whole family was going to be up.  It was also Memorial Day weekend.
We went to make Savannah's gravesite a little more Savannah-ish with lots of color.  We planted a groundcover rose bush, lots of moss roses and put some whirly flowers and a beautiful butterfly plant stand.  They are hoping to find a nice bench to put up there, too.  Judy made rainbow tassels for each of the grandkids that they could wear around their wrists or tie to the flower or butterfly in remembrance of Savannah, and Geri gave each of the families a crystal to hang to make rainbows in our houses.  It's a wonderful spot with amazing views of the mountains and a huge feeling of peace surrounds it.  I hope the color shows the love all of us have for her and our knowledge that we know where she is and that she is happy and still loves us.  I hope it will bring some comfort to the family.

Our kids love being at Grandma's house, her yard is an amazing playground!  The kids were excited to spend time with cousins that we don't see enough.  We can never have enough cousin time!

Geri and Cody have an amazing yard, too, with a sandbox surrounding a play area.  You can't tell very well in this picture, but I made a mermaid tail in the sand for Felicity.  The kids love coming to Idaho.  And I always breathe a little deeper in all that country air!

And one final picture.  This is how our fashionista dresses herself. Yes that's a pair of shorts and a shirt around her ankles and a tank top she couldn't quite figure out how to put on.  My little girl thinks she's a big girl already.
